Bus Stop Car Crash Information *UPDATED*

*5pm update: There are several eyewitness accounts in the comments that are worth reading.

I also updated the diagram to place the car making a left-hand turn onto California in the correct left-turn lane on Brand. My earlier version just roughly placed the NB car on Brand, and I didn't mean to imply that the left turning car wasn't in the proper lane. I stopped by the crash site this afternoon and added the skid marks I observed to the diagram. Remarkably, the demolished bus shelter has already been completely removed.

Here is some more information regarding the major bus stop car crash on Brand yesterday evening from Glendale PD spokesman Tom Lorenz:
A vehicle s/b Brand collided with a vehicle n/b Brand at the intersection of California. The s/b vehicle continued s/b (over 200 feet of skid marks), jumped the curb, and continued s/b on the west sidewalk of Brand. The vehicle sheared off a light post, demolished the bus stop, and sheared off a 25’ tree, then eventually came to rest as it collided with the Japanese and Argentinean restaurants. The vehicle then caught fire in the engine compartment. The fire was extinguished with a fire extinguisher retrieved from the trunk of a patrol vehicle. Both vehicles were totaled and damage spread debris in the area, to include battery acid from a vehicle battery that was broken in half. The driver of the n/b vehicle suffered a broken leg and was transported to USC in stable condition. The driver and two passengers of the s/b vehicle complained of pain; the driver was transported to a local hospital. Fortunately, no pedestrians or restaurant patrons were injured.
Thank goodness no one was waiting for a bus or leaving El Morfi. I made a map of the crash based on the new info. I'm speculating that the NB driver was turning left, I don't positively know that but it seems like the most plausible scenario. The Google Maps image is a bit outdated- the sidewalk is currently much wider, which I indicated with the dotted black line.

interesting. i'm asking because i was at el morfi at the time of the crash, and was wondering who was in the car that crashed into the sidewalk..

Wow, that must've been scary. I'm not sure who was in that car other than "a driver and two passengers" who complained of pain. I walked by the scene today at lunch (amazingly, the tree and bus stop were already gone) and tried to visualize what happened. You can see the skid marks leading very clearly from the middle of the intersection.

Did you see which way the sidewalk car was facing when it finally stopped? I was trying to figure out how it could've damaged El Morfi AND Aoba the way it did and wondered if perhaps the car spun around backwards (facing north).

Hi, I just came across you blog while searching for any info. I witnessed the whole entire accident! It was the scariest thing ever and I am horribly traumatized. The toyota rav 4 heading southbound was driving at least 50 mph when he hit the left turn car at the intersection!!! I could not believe my eyes when I saw him take off at the same stoplight we were both at 2 blocks up. I hope the driver goes to jail or is punished somehow... It was so strange because I noticed his reckless driving when he approached next to me at the stoplight, and I had this sick feeling he was going to accelerate full speed... I still can't believe it!

Yes.. it was VERY scary.

When the sidewalk car finally stopped it's front was facing the store fronts and the tree was on its hood.

I'm also curious about your diagram that you created. You make it look like that car that was turning left was not in the left turn lane-- whether that has any bearing as to what happened, I'm not sure.

I wonder how fast the SB vehicle was going to have skidded as far as it did. .

Very interesting, thanks for posting your accounts. If you look at my first post with the pictures, you can see the Rav-4's Toyota logo lying on the ground. I did not mean to suggest in my diagram that the left turning car wasn't in the left-turn lane, that was just an oversight on my part. I'll update the diagram to correct that.

Has anyone else found any information other than this website regarding teh crash?

To the anonymous that said you were side-by-side with the south-bound vehicle, was there any chance he/she was a young driver?

I saw 2 young men sitting on the floor by the Rav4 talking to the police...

...could it have been them?

I've been searching all day to find out any info. I even called last night to be a witness, but no one has contacted me. Scott, should I call the same officer you spoke to?

It was a male driver (I believe I saw 2 other male passengers), yes they did look young perhaps in the 20's...

Sergeant Lorenz's e-mail address is TLorenz@ci.glendale.ca.us. I'm sure he will be able to direct you to the appropriate party.

I was at El Morfi. Me and my friend were sitting right next to the door and window as it happened. Ironically we were the only ones with window seats. We got there moments before and decided to sit by the window so we could watch the people outside. Moments later we heard an amazingly loud crash. Then a very loud rumble was coming our way. In the corner of my eye I could see things flying every which way and the SUV barreling our way. The impact of the SUV with the bus stop, the tree, and the building was deafening and shook the whole place. We quick had to jump up and run out of the way because we figured the SUV or the tree was going to smash into the window and injure us pretty badly. The table outside was completely smashed. The waiter told us he was going to sit us out there to generate business. Thank God we didn't. The glass window at the restaurant did not break but the force of the tree impact knocked the table next to us over and shattered glass everywhere. We went outside and also noticed a man on the sidewalk on the ground in serious pain. At first I thought he was thrown from the vehicle but he didn't seem to be cut in any way. I believe he was on the sidewalk and was hit by this SUV. All I know is that the SUV was going very fast, possibly trying to beat a light or something. It should not have been going that fast and it really annihilated everything on that sidewalk. I really thought I could have died.
