You might want to check this out too - the story of Casa Verdugo - one of the original Verdugo adobes that was converted into a restaurant in the 1890s or so. It was actually one of the first Mexican restaurants in the LA area (not that authentic Mexican food wasn't around - it was just served in people's homes.) http://ravenjake.vox.com/
